Q: How do you recommend bringing a new baby to a home with a dog? I know she will do fine, but I have heard that having a doll around might help them prepare. Do you recommend this? What is the best way to introduce house dogs to a new baby? I have
heard of bringing in a newborn style doll...will that just confuse them?
Q. We have a 13-month-old chocolate lab that has soft tissue damage in her right, rear leg. Their veterinarian says to keep her from running or jumping for 3 weeks. She has so much energy that it is almost impossible. She is used to going out every night and playing with her friends off lead and she loves it. At the time she is due to go she normally goes crazy. Any ideas?
Q: My 8-year-old Cocker Spaniel was sleeping and jumped up and started scratching his left ear and shaking his head. I though something crawled in his ear the way he jumped. I took him to the vet and she said his ears are fine. She swabbed his ears and looked under a microscope and said there were no signs of any infection, mites, or anything. His ears were not red or swollen. There was no wax or any signs of infection. She flushed his ears and told me to bring him back in a week. I brought him back and she couldn’t find anything wrong but he was still shaking his head and scratching his ear. She said the only thing she could see is a tuft of hair in front of his eardrum but many dogs have that and she didn’t think that was the problem. She gave me Enrofloxacin 136 mg and told me to give him one a day for 2 weeks in case he had an inner ear infection behind the eardrum that she couldn’t see. After giving him the medication he is still shaking his head and scratching his ear. He also is not hearing well. The vet can’t find anything wrong. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
Q: I have a 9 month old female black lab. She was hit by a car a few days ago and has 3 to 4 fractures in the pelvic area. The long bone on the left side has a clean fracture and the bottom right bone that is below the ball and socket area has a fracture. The pelvic canal is also damaged and she will have to be spayed. She is not able to urinate on her own. Is this something that will correct itself and is this typical with this type of injury? The vet said he would not suggest surgery as well. Will the dog have permanent disabilities from this like arthritis and limping? I would also like to know how long it might be before she is able to walk on her own. Thanks for any help you can give.
Q: I have a male Dalmation neutered before the age of 2, not sure exactly when, as I am the second owner. He is now age 10. He is strictly an outdoor dog, but if let in for a few minutes to roam the house, he does not urinate on anything. He lifts his leg and urinates on anything outside, block fence, shed, lawn, mower if left out, and bags of grass left for even 5 minutes in the yard. If left in the garage, he will urinate on any and everything in the garage although he doesn’t urinate on patio furniture if it is on the cemented area. We are getting a pool, which will be fenced in, and I know he will urinate on the iron pool fence, and the decking will become discolored and smell. Is there any deterrent that works to spray on iron pool fence, or any other recommendations?
Q: I have read on the web that Vitamin C & 81 mg of aspirin and/or acupuncture can help a dog with hip dysplasia. I have a 10-year-old Malamute and he has trouble getting up from a resting position. Is there any physical therapy, hot water bottles- we have a hot tub that we can do?? Thank you
Q: My 12 week old Golden Retriever puppy has severe twitching in his front right leg. He cries and whimpers during the day and night. We have been to the Vet and a Pet Hospital 4 times in the last week to help. He was tested for Lymes and it came out negative. They think it might be growing pains. He is on a pain and inflammatory medication. Help! Can you think of anything else that might be wrong with him?
Q: Hi I have a GSD who since the age of 2 and a half as had problems relating to anal glands, he had his glands taken out, but the holes never healed, he has had various operations, and the holes seem to be holding together for now almost a year now, he his now 7 years old, (they say the problem he has is PERAINAL FISTULAS) My vet feels that we should castrate him – that it would help????????????????
Q: We have a Golden Retriever and we think she has poison Ivy. She keeps nibbling at her tail and is ripping out the hair in some spots. My husband took her in the woods and he has poison ivy on his legs. We think she may have it too. Do you have any advise?
Q: I have 3 vizslas. One 7-year-old male and two, 2-year-old females. The male has “spots” all over his head and back. We have changed his bedding, given him special food, given him brewer’s yeast and Lipiderm supplement, had skin scrapings done at the vet etc. etc. etc.. and still we don’t know what it is. His demeanor has not changed and the other dogs don’t have it, so obviously, it’s not contagious. He doesn’t scratch at it and it doesn’t seem to bother him, but he has lost an awful lot of hair on his tail and back. It looks like a rash, but the spots aren’t raw or oozing fluid. I am stumped and it seems as if my vet might be too!! Any suggestions?
Q: I have a 95 pd, 4 year-old, blonde lab. I have had many labs in my life and this one (Chance) is by far the smartest. He probably should have been a disabled child’s dog as he has a working vocabulary of about 50 commands. At any rate, he was hit by a car while friends were watching him over a holiday. By the bruising he was hit on the right side of the body just behind and around the right front leg. It was only three days and the vet says he has nerve damage. He is not using the leg now. He limps. The vet says it is a 50/50 chance he returns to normal. I refuse to expect the fact he might have to have it be amputated. I feel if ANY thing can make it back, Chance can. He seems to have some control over the leg, but the paw is limp and he appears to not have feeling. Last night while he was sleeping, he was twitching BOTH his paws. He was dreaming…. you know dogs do. Was that involuntary twitching a good sign?? Also as I said he has some control over the leg. I gave him a pig ear to chew and he moved the leg to help hold the bone. I was so happy. Again, he did not move the paw, only the leg. I just hate this waiting. Is there surgery to do to see how damaged the nerve is? Please help me with your insight as I am a mess. I will go to any measure necessary.
Q: Our dog jumped out the back of a moving pick-up, and a vet told us to let her lay around for 30 days, and if no better he would x-ray. She is in pain. Is there anything we can give her for the pain? And isn’t 30 days a long time to suffer? Please help!
Q: My 3 year old Toy Yorkie has recently having trouble breathing as well as sneezing a lot. We live in NY and have had a horrible allergy season. However, while online looking up yorkie health problems I found it could be more serious. Can you tell me if I should be worried and when to take her to the VET?

Q: My dog was assumed to have been hit by a car. She has a severe fracture to her pelvis, which resulted to part of the pelvis in her hip joint. We have been advised to go to an orthopedic vet, but there isn’t any near. Will rest help to heal at all??
Q: We found a puppy, a Jack Russell, who had his toes removed on rear leg and a couple of toes on the other rear leg. The vet wanted to amputate the leg with no toes because there wasn’t a pad anymore and it wasn’t infected. However we didn’t want to do that so we elected to give him antibiotics and cover the foot when he went outside. He developed a callus or some kind of pad and x-rays showed a new bone growth after the antibiotics were gone but the infection is now returned after about 1 month and the vet thinks the best root would be to amputate the leg or portion of the foot. Is there anything else that can be done?
Q: I have a 10-week-old Yorkshire puppy. I am beginning to train him on lead and also to sit. When I put the lead on him, he will not walk and he will begin to shake. What is the best way to train him? HELP!!

Q: Our 4-year-old *censored*er Spaniel marks everywhere in the backyard outdoors. The odor makes it unpleasant to sit anywhere in the yard. How do I stop him from using the sides of the house, garage and fence? We have tried training him to use one item like an old birdbath farther to the back of the yard. How do I eliminate the smell on the building?
Q: Are intact male dogs more likely to be attacked and victimized by neutered male dogs? I have been told this is true and this is why I must get my dog neutered.
Q: In your last question you mentioned that fixing a dog in the 6-8 month area can help with the leg lifting. If a dog gets fixed later than that - is it too late? Or just a harder habit to break?
Q: I have a Yorkshire Terrier that is nearly 8 months old. We have been approached to use him for breading purposes. Is he too young? And what things should we do before we make our decision?
Q: Our 15-year-old dog was hit by a car and has multiple fractures of the hip. When he tries to walk (supported by abdominal sling per vet’s instruct) his back feet curl under. Will this correct itself in time or is it something that must be treated or something untreatable and permanent?
